In some cases, some time is needed to research competitors or comparative systems to a web application we are being asked to plan.

If this is the case, general research into any "black boxes" (technical elements of the project that are unclear from the data provided by the client) is needed in order to provide a ballpark estimate to the client at the end of the system draft time. Possible black boxes are usually identified during the initial hour meeting, so you will know at this point if you will be needing research time or not.
